Book Signing: Meet Dee and Karen at the 79th Water

Book Signing: Meet Dee and Karen at the 79th Waterford Fair! 10/6 2pm-4pm at the Old Mill in Waterford, Virginia - a quaint historic village 50 miles and about 250 years from Washington DC. The fair runs for 3 days 10/6-10/8 featuring 85+ juried contemporary and heritage artisans spread throughout the village, period re-enactors, live music, a wine & beer garden, homes & garden tours, a fine art exhibit and more. The Old Mill Shop will be filled with a selection of one-of-a-kind handmade crafts from more than 100 artisans and craftspeople including basketry, woodwork, jewelry, textiles, pottery, Christmas decorations, and other decorative objects. The "Book Nook" will display and sell the works of local authors.

Metamorphosis – Cocoon of Change

I have been going through a long period of stagnation, personally and creatively due to some of life’s challenges. After a string of artistic successes over the last couple of years, I found myself unable to pull out any art supplies or lift my Apple pencil with the desired joy I was used to. Yesterday, I decided I would climb out of my cluttered mind and play again using Procreate on my ipad with no expectations (haha – fail). I am not thrilled with the art that emerged but am proud of the calm and hope I feel in the aftermath. The last image shows the early stage of the drawing in which my husband noticed a butterfly in my mess of marks. I then decided to embrace that it indeed was a butterfly. When I Googled the word “metamorphosis” I stumbled on an article on Oprah.com called “How to Deal with Major Life Changes” by Martha Beck. She writes about the four phases of human metamorphosis and calls this process “the cocoon of change.”

Phase 1: Dissolving (the person you’ve been)

Phase 2: Imagining (reorganize the remnants of your old identity into something different)

Phase 3: Re-forming (implementation of the change process)

Phase 4: Flying (your new identity is fully formed and able to fly)

Despite being nudged by friends and family to “just start” I knew I had to wait until I gave myself permission to move forward. I know it is a process and I hope to make more progress over time.
